Our Client
A US-based family office assessing the acquisition of a long‑established manufacturer of industrial backup power systems.
The Situation
The company was profitable but static, struggling to evolve from traditional hardware sales into a service‑rich, subscription‑like model. The investor needed to know whether the underlying technology and engineering culture could support this transition, or whether the business would require heavy reinvention.
What We Did
Customer & Product‑Market Fit Review
Interviewed top enterprise customers to identify what they truly valued and to separate loyalty to the brand from dependence on legacy equipment.
Engineering Capability & Skills Analysis
Assessed the R&D team’s processes and openness to new tools, as well as the state of control systems and software embedded in the hardware.
Monetisation & Service Model Testing
Modelled several hardware‑as‑a‑service structures, incorporating realistic service and upgrade costs as well as constraints.
Amberg Team Impact
We concluded that the company’s core technology and customer relationships were strong, but that current service processes were unscalable. We recommended structuring the transaction in phases and linking part of consideration to building a stronger digital engineering capability. The investor proceeded, put in new leadership on the digital side and launched a more scalable service model ahead of plan.
